Multiplying and Dividing Fractions
Throughout the year so far I have tried to relate math to things that you are interested in. During this project you will be given the chance to see the connection between mathematics and the creation of your favorite foods. You will see how chefs and other food preparers use multiplication and division of fractions to meet the needs of their guests. The directions are as follows:
1. Choose a favorite food. It could be an appetizer, main course, or even a dessert.
2. Search the websites that I have provided as links for a recipe on your chosen dish.
3. Make sure that the recipe includes at least 3 fractions or mixed numbers for the ingredients.
4. Make sure that the recipe includes information on how many people it serves.
5. Multiply all of your ingredients by a certain number. For example if you choose to double your recipe you would multiply by two. If you choose to triple it you would multiply by three and so on. Just be clear on what you have multiplied by.
6. Then state how many people your recipe will now serve after you have done the multiplication.
7. Present your project as a poster. Posters may include drawings or printed pictures. We will hang these posters on the wall. I will show examples during class.
