Multiplication and Division Equations

Multiplication and Division

Standard

6.N.12 Demonstrate an understanding of the inverse relationship of addition and subtraction, and use that understanding to simplify computation and solve problems.

6.P.2    Replace variables with given values and evaluate/simplify, e.g., 2() + 3 when  = 4. 

6.P.3    Use the properties of equality to solve problems, e.g., if       + 7 = 13, then  = 13 – 7, therefore  = 6; if 3 x  = 15, then 1/3 x 3 x  = 1/3 x 15, therefore  = 5. 

Objective

To solve multiplication and division equations.

Lesson

To solve a Multiplication equation, use the inverse to find the value of the variable.

Ex. 5s = 20

The inverse of multiplication is division, so divide both sides of the equation by 5

5s -:- 5 = 20 -:- 5, s = 4

To solve a Division equation, use the invers to finde the value of the variable.

Ex. y/7 = 3

The inverse of division is multiplication, so multiply both sides by 7.

y/7 * 7 = 3 * 7, y = 21
