Rate
Rate
Standard
6.M.3 Solve problems involving proportional relationships and units of measurement, e.g., same system unit conversions, scale models, maps, and speed.
Cluster
C16
Vocabulary
Rate- ratio of two measures that have different units
Unit Rate- a rate with a denominator of 1
Objective
To write and identify rates, equivalent rates and unit rates
Lesson
The International Space Station orbits the Earth at an average rate of 15 miles every three seconds. The rate would be written as 15 m/ 3 sec
An equivalent rate would be, how long will it take the Station to travel 150 miles?
Because 150 is 10 times 15, we would multiply the seconds by 10 as well. making the equivalent rate 150 m/ 30 sec
(think of it like equivalent fractions)
The unit rate would be how long does it travel in 1 second.
Because I divide 3 seconds by 3 to get 1 second. I would divide 15 miles by 3 to get 5. So it would travel at a unit rate of 5 miles/ 1 second.
