Plotting Coordinates
Plotting Coordinates
Standard
6.G.4 Graph points and identify coordinates of points on the Cartesian coordinate plane (all four quadrants).
Cluster
C1
Vocabulary
x-axis- the main line in a coodrinate plane that runs horizontally
y-axis- the main line in a coordinate plane that runs vertiaccly
quadrant- the different sections of a coodinate plane (labeled I, II, III, IV)
Objective
The students will be able to plot points in all 4 quadrants on the coordinate plane.
Lesson
This drawing shows an example of a Cartesian coordinate system. The horizontal purple line is the x-axis and the vertical green line is the y-axis. These axes are references from which we can uniquely define a point in the plane.
Together the axes separate the plane into 4 parts called quadrants. The quadrants are labeled as I, II, III, and IV. The picture below shows all of the four quadrants.
To plot points on the coordinate plane, you need to follow the x- axis then the y- axis. The points usually look like (x, y)
To find a point on the graph you wouldmove along the x-axis first then they y-axis
