Equivalent Fractions

Standard

6.N.5 Identify and determine common equivalent fractions, mixed numbers, decimals, and percents.

Cluster

C2

Vocabulary

Fraction- a number in the form of a/b where the number represents part of a whole

Equivalent fractions-they represent the same number

Simplest form- a fraction is in siplest formif the numerator and denominator have a GCF of 1. To simplify a fraction divide its numerator and denominator by thier GCF.

Objective

To write equivalent fractions

Lesson

1. What are equivalent fractions?

Fractions that have the same value, or are at the same place on the number line.

Example. 1
2
and 2
4
are equivalent. They are at the same cut

in the number line.

1/2 = 2/4
2. How can we know when fractions are equivalent?

Their numerators and denominators are in the same ratio.

The student who has not learned about ratios (Lesson 16) may nevertheless benefit from the summary below.

Example 1. 1
2
= 2
4
because each numerator has the same ratio to its

denominator, namely half.

Any fraction where the numerator is half of the denominator will be

equivalent to 1
2
.
1
2
= 2
4
= 3
6
= 5
10
= 8
16

1 is half of 2. 2 is half of 4. 3 is half of 6. And so on. These are all at the same place on the number line. Each number is half of 1.

In terms of equal ratios, if a pie is cut into 2 pieces and you eat 1 of them, you will get just as stuffed as when the pie is in 4 pieces and you eat 2; or if you eat 4 out of 8, or 5 out of 10, and so on. In each case, you have eaten an equivalent "fraction" of the pie, namely half.
